November 1, 2026

  • Supports medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing with additional analytical testing capabilities
  • Complements existing microbiological and analytical testing services offered at the Swindon, UK Laboratory

As part of our long-term commitment to supporting medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing, STERIS is pleased to announce the launch of MALDI-ToF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight) identification testing in the United Kingdom.

The introduction of MALDI-ToF technology strengthens our laboratory testing capabilities by providing fast, accurate, and reliable microbial identification.

This advanced testing method enables the rapid identification of bacteria, yeasts, and fungi at genus and species level, helping Customers better understand potential contamination sources and make informed decisions more quickly. It can also help Customers investigate unexpected microbiological results, elevated bioburden, environmental monitoring excursions, and positive sterility tests.

MALDI-ToF technology uses mass spectrometry to identify microorganisms based on their unique protein profiles, offering a highly accurate and efficient alternative to traditional identification methods.

The service can support routine monitoring, validation studies, contamination investigations, and troubleshooting activities throughout the product development and manufacturing lifecycle.

This offering strengthens STERIS’s ability to serve as a single-source microbiology testing partner to support medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers maintain product quality, support regulatory compliance, and protect patient safety. In addition to our UK laboratory, MALDI-ToF microbial identification is available at our Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and Tullamore, Ireland locations.

In addition to our UK laboratory capabilities, STERIS provides laboratory testing services through a global network of facilities across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Product release to market is further supported by the STERIS AST global network of contract irradiation and gas sterilization facilities.
